RELAC celebrated its 2025 scholarship recipients at the recent gala Recognition Luncheon held in Whittier.

“We have five, exceptional scholarship recipients, who represent the promise of our future,” she said. “Whether they are just beginning their college journey or continuing to excel at the university level, their dedication and potential remind us of why we invest in the next generation,” said Hopkins.

The financial aid program was established in 2019. It is open to RELAC members and their families. Students are nominated by a RELAC family member. For more information on the program, send an e-mail to admin@relac.org or visit the website, www.relac.org.

Scholarship award winners were selected based on academic achievement, volunteer community service and work experience. They are:

Carson Edgington and grandfather Dale Edgington, sponsor.

Carson Edgington, nominated by grandfather Dale Edgington, a RELAC member, was Valedictorian for his Monrovia High School graduation ceremony. He will attend the University of California at Los Angeles, commonly known as UCLA, and major in political science in preparation for a career as an attorney and ultimately a judgeship.

Jaden Drisdom and grandmother Florine Hill, sponsor.

Jaden Drisdom, a senior at Loyola Marymount University, was nominated by RELAC member and grandmother, Florine Hill. He has a passion for service demonstrated by organizing food drives in downtown Los Angeles, volunteering at convalescent homes, or leading projects on campus.

Javon Drisdom attends Pepperdine University where he is majoring in business administration, and is an active member of the Black Student Association. He was nominated by grandmother Florine Hill, a proud member of RELAC. A future goal is to create a non-profit organization that mentors underserved youth.

Grace Hager, nominated by RELAC member and grandmother Darlene Gidley, will attend California State University – Long Beach, pursuing a bachelor of fine arts in dance. A graduate of Huntington Academy of Dance, she dedicated many years to studying ballet. She teaches the performance art and dance to younger students.

Andrew Del Monte, nominated by grandfather and RELAC member Jim Del Monte, was graduated from Cuthbertson High School in North Carolina where he maintained an A average in all classes. He will attend North Carolina State University and major in industrial engineering.

After a 40+ year battle, we have eliminated the Government Pension Offset (GPO) and Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) through the Social Security Fairness Act. RELAC was there every step of the way, and we will continue to support you.

• Updating and processing in stages beginning in late February.
• Monthly benefits being paid one month after (e.g. February’s payment arrives in March).
• Retroactive benefits being issued in a lump sum before your monthly benefit is adjusted.
• Sending two notices, one confirming the removal of WEP/GPO and another reflecting your updated benefit amount.

• Verify or update your mailing address and direct deposit information at www.ssa.gov/myaccount.
• Visit www.ssa.gov/benefits/retirement/social-security-fairness-act.html.
• Keep a close eye out for updates from the Social Security Administration.

The repeal of the GPO and WEP is a momentous achievement for retired civil servants nationwide. We are proud that RELAC and its membership had a role in the advocacy that led to this historic repeal. RELAC will always fight for what you deserve, and together, we can win!

The L.A. County Assessor’s Office needs the assistance of any retiree who has worked for the assessor in any capacity (including appraisers, GIS techs, administrative staff, etc.) for disaster relief and recovery efforts.

With over 16,000 affected properties, the Assessor’s Office’s current resources will not be enough to meet the workload.

The Assessor’s Office is looking to bring back retirees under the 120-Day Retiree Rehire Program. The Assessor’s Office seeks your expertise for misfortune and calamity work to relieve the burden on active staff and allow them to perform essential work to assist those affected by the fires.
